about
This song is a call out to all those who want to see some kind of change in our political systems and our power structures. In particular, it refers to the work people are left to do once being released from prison. Exploited by employers who knew that with a criminal record, their options for work were minimal; In one example and ex-prisoner was paid by the amount of work he produced rather than by the hour. Unfortunately, it took so long to complete each unit of work that he was being paid below the minimum wage for the hours he was putting in. To combat this, he decided he would do the work as quickly as he could and get as much done in a time that would equal minimum wage. He was let go the next day as his work was apparently, ‘not up to standard’.
And yet if they were to exploit the system back, by working extra for cash in hand or claiming benefits whilst working, these actions would be seen as illegal.
This song calls for all people in a working class to unite rather than fight over the scraps left by those in power. Whilst the lucky ones may reach a middle-class status, it is often done, indirectly, off the backs of those with criminal records or foreign nationals whose wages can be artificially and immorally suppressed. This song calls for all working-class people to fight this style of oppression.
We give it up but we don’t wanna give in
The money left is starting to look pretty thin
Beaten down by reliance on the oligarchs
Their days left are starting to look numbered
And they can’t hold us down
I’d pay my tax, but no one trusts the government
Cos they were bought out by every bidder
Instead we trust in a hand that’s invisible
It filters up but it never seems to trickle down
And they won’t hold us down
No they won’t hold us down
We’re going nowhere, fighting over scraps of power
Exploiting resource while the world is in its final hour
We’re giving up, we’re giving in, we gave it everything
We’ll take it back and you’ll be left with nothing
We can't unite, if we don't know what we're fighting for
We will not fight, if we don’t know what we’re moving to
You took it all, you take our all, you take our everything
We’ll take it back and you’ll be left with nothing
We gave it up but we don’t wanna give in
And all that’s left is starting to look pretty thin
And I don’t trust in a system that oppresses us
Your hold on us is starting to get broken
Cos they won’t hold us down
We’re going nowhere, fighting over scraps of power
Exploiting resource while the world is in its final hour
We’re giving up, we’re giving in, we gave it everything
We’ll take it back and you’ll be left with nothing
We can't unite, if we don't know what we're fighting for
We will not fight, if we don’t know what we’re moving to
You took it all, you take our all, you take our everything
We’ll take it back and you’ll be left with nothing
50% of sales go to prison-music charity, Changing Tunes. Break III formed whilst inside prison in the South West of the UK. We write anti-capitalist alternative rock music based on the experiences and stories told by prisoners.
This band formed the same way we did, in prison. Their hard-hitting socio-political rap over heavy grooves, hip hop beats and hooks will blow you away! Break III
