about

This song is born out of the pure frustration I felt after listening to the stories of prisoners. Both have had difficulties thrust upon them and receive more in the way of punishment and oppression from the prison system then they do support. It is then left up to charities like Changing Tunes to attempt to work people through their problems with minimal funding, time and expertise.

A “Fordian, carceral nightmare” refers to Henry Fords style of manufacturing where each person has a small job they do on repeat. This greatly increases efficiency of production as each person doesn’t need to know how to build an entire car, they just have to learn their part. Beyond manufacturing, this dehumanises us; treats us like machines with a single purpose. It reduces us to cogs in a system, unable to see the whole picture. Perhaps if we saw the whole picture, we wouldn’t accept it as reality.

lyrics

Don’t care for governance, We gotta keep on move, keep on moving
Don’t care for systems, When all it does is our every move
Don’t care for power, When all we have is taken from us
Won’t for no one, 'Cos the time is running out to make a change

Repetition holds us, In a Fordian carceral nightmare
Our purpose held down, By the exploitation of our working day
Your life is forfeit, At the price of someone else’s leisure
We’re bound and broken, But the time is running out to make a change
