about

When being constantly faced with how your society treats those it seemingly cares for the least, it is hard to believe that you live in a great nation or that humanity is in any way progressing. This is a song of lament brought on by becoming a father and realising how hard the world may be for my child. It is an attack on the neo-liberal ideology that suggests you can be anything you want if you work hard enough. There are few people who work harder than those who survive prison and many of the most entrepreneurial people I have met, have been drug dealers. Whilst writing this song I had a clear picture of my child walking down a narrow path to an end goal that was undetermined and randomly chosen. Would his life be happy, easy, difficult or wrought with trouble; I have no way of knowing. What I do know is that any ideology that claims we live in a meritocracy, is a false ideology.

lyrics

Stuck in the messy middle, looking for grips to hold
And no one buys the life that we’ve been sold
I can’t raise a kid to live in a fantasy
And there’s no escape that I can see

We’ve been told that we’ve been holding onto
And living a dream that ain’t real
We’ve been told that we’ve been holding onto
And living a dream that ain’t real

Blaming boomers for the shit that we’re left in
But they were sold the same lies that we bought
And I can’t stand to see us stuck in a fantasy
And there’s no escape that’s more than a dream

We’ve been told that we’ve been holding onto
And living a dream that ain’t real
We’ve been told that we’ve been holding onto
And living a dream that ain’t real
Living a dream that ain’t real
We’ve been told that we’ve been holding onto
And living a dream that ain’t real
