about
This song is based on two things: The writings of Foucault and; the saddest story I have ever been told by prisoners.
Firstly, Foucault writes about “Bentham’s Panopticon”; a perfectly designed prison where all prison cells can be seen all the time through its architectural design. It takes into account that there will never be enough manpower to survey everyone all the time, so instead, the tower which watches over everyone cannot be seen by those being watched. This leads to the idea that people don’t need to be perfectly surveyed, they just need to know that there is always the possibility that their actions are being observed.
The song talks about how this is happening beyond prisons now, creating a carceral society. We are all surveyed through technology (phones and CCTV) which would seem fine if you aren’t planning on doing anything wrong. However, the song raises the question, if you are always potentially being surveyed, how can you question, fight against or resist current power structures? This exposes the line between morality and legality. It might be illegal to overthrow a corrupt government, but that doesn’t mean it’s immoral.
Secondly, many prisoners and ex-prisoners have told me of nightmares they have suffered from since being incarcerated. Feelings of being trapped, the reality that life once released is often just a different sort of carcerality and the fear that your physical body is controlled more by the state than by your own actions, seems to lead to an understandable paranoia and recurring nightmares for many caught in the current prison system.
50% of sales go to prison-music charity, Changing Tunes. Break III formed whilst inside prison in the South West of the UK. We write anti-capitalist alternative rock music based on the experiences and stories told by prisoners.
This band formed the same way we did, in prison. Their hard-hitting socio-political rap over heavy grooves, hip hop beats and hooks will blow you away! Break III
